Professional Flea Treatment: What to Know and What to Expect

Fleas are more than just a nuisance, they can quickly turn into a serious infestation if not treated properly. At Causey’s Pest Control, we provide professional indoor flea treatments designed to eliminate fleas at every stage of their life cycle. Understanding how fleas develop and why follow-up treatments are sometimes necessary is key to long-term control.

Causey’s Pest Control proudly offers effective flea service in Dover, Clarksville, Paris, and surrounding areas.

Understanding the Flea Life Cycle

Fleas develop in four stages, and each stage plays a role in why professional treatment

1. Flea Eggs

Adult fleas lay eggs on pets, furniture, carpets, and bedding. These eggs are not sticky and easily fall into cracks, carpets, and hidden areas throughout the home. A single flea can lay dozens of eggs per day.

2. Larval Stage

Once eggs hatch, flea larvae emerge and hide deep in carpets, upholstery, and floor crevices. Larvae feed on organic debris and flea droppings. This stage is difficult to control without professional products.

3. Pupal Stage

The pupal stage is the most resistant stage of the flea life cycle. Fleas form a protective cocoon that shields them from many treatments and environmental conditions. Pupae can remain dormant for weeks or even months before emerging.

4. Adult Fleas

Adult fleas emerge when they sense movement, heat, or vibrations. Once active, they immediately seek a host to feed on and begin the cycle again.

Because fleas do not all emerge at once, professional treatment strategies are essential.

This structured process allows us to effectively eliminate fleas and provide long-term relief.

Identification & Scheduling

If you are experiencing flea activity, identification is usually straightforward. Common signs include:

  • Pets scratching excessively

  • Seeing fleas jump on floors, furniture, or pets

If you suspect fleas, give us a call. Our team will help confirm the issue and schedule your professional flea treatment promptly.

Customer Preparation Is Required

Professional Indoor Flea Treatment

During your scheduled service, our technician will:

  • Treat interior areas where fleas live and develop
  • Focus on carpets, baseboards, cracks, furniture, and flea-prone zones
  • Use professional-grade products designed to target multiple flea life stages

Our goal is to eliminate active fleas while disrupting future generations.

Continuous Treatment & Elimination

  • A successful flea control depends on breaking the flea life cycle and sometimes follow-up service is required.
  • In some cases, a one-time flea treatment may be sufficient, depending on the level of infestation. However, flea infestations often require follow-up treatment due to the flea life cycle.

Flea Treatment Preparation List

1. Declutter and Clear the Space:

Before any flea treatment, it’s crucial to declutter the area to be treated. This includes picking up toys, shoes, and clothing from the floors. Fleas can hide in these items, making it essential to clear them to ensure the treatment’s effectiveness.

Additionally, remove items from under beds and sofas. Fleas love dark, hidden spots, and by clearing these potential hiding spots, you create a more effective treatment environment.

2. Vacate the Premises:

During the flea treatment, it’s necessary for both animals and people to leave the premises for approximately 2-3 hours. This precaution is taken to ensure safety during the treatment process.

3. Pre-Treatment Vacuuming:

Before the treatment, thoroughly vacuum all areas, including floors and carpets, to stimulate flea eggs to hatch, making them more susceptible to treatment.

3. Protect Your Pets:

If you have fish, birds, or reptiles as pets, take special care to protect them during the treatment. Cover their cages or aquariums with a wet cloth to prevent any potential harm from the products used in flea treatments. Your pets’ safety is a top priority.

3. Post-Treatment Vacuuming:

Vacuuming plays a crucial role in flea treatment. After the treatment, vacuum again to remove any dead fleas and eggs. You can vacuum as much as you can after treatment to stimulate more eggs to hatch. Ensure that you dispose of the vacuum bag or clean the canister to prevent any fleas from escaping.

  • Vacuum regularly to stimulate flea eggs and pupae to hatch
  • Dispose of vacuum contents immediately after use
  • Monitor flea activity over the next 2 weeks

Vacuuming actually helps speed up the process by encouraging dormant fleas to emerge and contact treated surfaces.

Monitoring & Scheduling Follow-Up Service

We recommend monitoring your home closely for 2 weeks after initial treatment.

  • If flea activity continues, please contact us to schedule a follow-up treatment
  • All follow-up services must be scheduled within 2–3 weeks of the initial flea treatment. (Follow-up service must be scheduled within this window)
  • Scheduling a timely follow-up treatment is important to ensure complete flea control and prevent reinfestation.
  • ⚠️ Important Policy Notice: If one month or more passes without a follow-up and flea activity returns, it will be considered a new infestation and will require a new full initial treatment at the current full-service price.

Why Follow-Up Treatments Are Important

  • Flea eggs and pupae may survive the initial treatment
  • Pupae can hatch weeks later, releasing new adult fleas
  • Flea gestation and delayed hatching mean activity may continue temporarily

A follow-up treatment targets newly emerged fleas before they can reproduce again.

Important Note:
Follow-up flea treatments are paid services, but they are not as costly as the initial treatment.

We strongly recommend scheduling a follow-up within 2–3 weeks of your initial service if flea activity persists.

What to Expect After Your Flea Treatment

  • After treatment, it is normal to still see fleas for a short period.
  • Fleas may continue to emerge from pupae already present
  • The treatment remains active and will continue killing fleas
  • Activity should gradually decrease over time
